Optical Burst Switching (OBS), which is a promising hybrid approach between coarse-grained optical circuit switching and find-grained optical packet switching, has been a hot topic in academy. The benefit of OBS over conventional circuit switching is that there is no need to dedicate a wavelength for each end-to-end connection. And OBS is more viable than optical packet switching because the data burst does not need to be buffered or processed at the intermediate cross connects. This allows the problem of buffering in the optical domain to be circumvented. So far, although OBS has been studied for several years by many institutes, it hasn't been developed to be a set of mature theory and technique. Accordingly, the dissertation focuses on the key issues on optical burst switching and made a comprehensive and systematic research on the theory model, architecture, routing and signaling protocols, burst assembly, contention resolution and QoS guarantee...
