This dissertation is based on "Conexant FTA DVB-S Set-Top box software development"and "Philips analog-digital hybrid iDTV system design"these two projects. The set-top box hardware and software technology are analyzed in detail in the dissertation and it focus on two topics, i.e., Set-Top box application software design and Analog-Digital hybrid iDTV system design. The dissertation is organized as following: in chapter 1, the evolution of analog and digital television technology are briefly introduced, also the main contents of the dissertation are presented; in chapter 2, we describes some important but may possibly often be ignored issues in STB overall system, such as video and audio formats, teletext transmission, the relationship between channel modulation mode and transmission bandwidth, etc.; Chapter 3 based on the detailed analysis of Conexant STB software source code, modern STB's software architecture and hardware principle are discussed. For software architecture, most of the key software architecture components, from hardware driver to real time operating system and application software, all these are analyzed. In the end, the STB's hardware programming model is presented. During software architecture analysis, the author has incorporated in his own idea. In chapter 4, a deep discussion of STB software design is made. Firstly, the basic function of STB software is described, then the dissertation focus on some important software programming ideas, such as message rooting, OSD window function, system state-machine model, etc., their application in STB software design are discussed in detail. Chapter 5 focuses on the system design of analog-digital hybrid iDTV system, which represents the new trends of television technology. Some important issues that may affect the overall performance of the iDTV system are analyzed, such as power supply and video output filter network, etc. Based on the practical experience, the debugging procedure for the digital board and some issues that may possibly meet during debugging are discussed. Also the iDTV analog television software integration has been briefly presented.
