Increasing requirements of the communication bandwidth by more and more multimedia terminate user have greatly pushed the development of information technology. And this requires higher dense network in local area, so many kinds of transmission medium are developed. Among them, Polymer Optical Fiber (POF) has get more and more interests these years because of its excellent performances in short distance communications. In this thesis, transmission properties of POF have been investigated, and an important application of POF in parallel Optical Interconnects as two-dimensional fiber arrays has also been studied. In the first chapter, developments of POF, such as its history, category, manufacturer and its physical or transmission performances have been reviewed. And also, we introduced some advantages of Optical Interconnects over Electric Interconnects.In the second chapter, by analyzing fiber mode equations, all transmission modes of POF with large diameter and large numerical aperture have been resolved successfully. High precision approximation has been made to avoid special function overflow, and the math model we used is a numerical graphic method.In the third chapter, based on the results achieved in chapter 2, POF performances, such as differential mode attenuation(DMA), dispersion and bandwidth, are calculated by using mode power couple equations. The influences of DMA and dispersion on the bandwidth of POF are also studied.In the forth chapter, based on the analysis of the reported connection and communication methods of two-dimensional fiber arrays, improvements have been made on a two-dimensional fiber arrays. Structure characteristics of the new 2-D fiber array are theoretically given and proved.In the last chapter, manufacturing method of the two-dimensional fiber arrays for the parallel Optical Interconnects are presented and realized. Two kinds of instruments to realize the fibers arrays of 6×6 and 8×8 are given, which have good stability and high fill rate.
