With the increasing requirements of communication bandwidth, electronic interconnects have become the bottleneck between the high-speed processors and high-speed networks. So, it is a trend for optical interconnects to take the place of electronic interconnects in the future. In the meanwhile, people play emphasis on parallel optical interconnects because of the development of the parallel procession technology. This paper discusses a new type of optical fiber array parallel optical interconnects——two dimensional near hexagonal close-packed(N-HCP) optical fiber array parallel optical interconnects and proposes the couple between vertical cavity surface emitting lasers(VCSEL) array and polymer optical fiber(POF) array.In the first chapter, the major advantage of the optical interconnects and its applications have been reviewed. Then, this chapter discusses the performances and structure parameters of VCSEL and POF, which are the ideal optical source and the ideal transmission medium for the optical interconnects to be reality.In the second chapter, several types of parallel optical interconnects are introduced and compared to give their merits and disadvantage. Afterwards, this paper lays stress on two dimensional N-HCP optical fiber array parallel optical interconnects , including positions parameters and its statistical laws, for the N-HCP optical fiber array parallel optical interconnects have simple structure compared with other two dimensional optical fiber array parallel optical interconnects.In the third chapter, based on the method of overlap integral, the coupling efficiency between VCSEL and POF is calculated with matlab. And then, using the transform of coordinate, the coupling efficiency, when VCSEL and POF are off axes or have gap, has been presented.In the last chapter, manufacturing methods of the N-HCP optical fiber array are proposed and realized. After modifying the position formula of the N-HCP optical fiber array with a V-groove angle of 900, the formula for any V-groove angle is proposed. So, a lab sample of the N-HCP optical fiber array with V-groove angle of 1150 is studied by calculating its position statistical laws and the coupling efficiency between VCSEL array and the N-HCP optical fiber array.
