With the increasing of communication services and the enlarging of communication network scale, studies on high-reliable and high-survivable optical networks have been a highlight. For satisfying the request in the aspects of reliability and survivability, it is important to establish their evaluation models for the performance simulations of optical network parameters.In the first chapter of this paper, the basic structure, characteristics, and the development as well as some key optical components of optical networks are introduced, and the main issues of reliability and survivability of the optical networks are reviewed. In the second chapter, the basic theoretical implements of the network reliability studies, namely, reliability mathematics and graphic theory, are briefly given, and methods of reliability analyses are summarized. In the third chapter, performance parameters of key components in optical networks, especially their reliability properties, are evaluated and analyzed. In the fourth chapter, a simple model is introduced, and then, an evaluation model for the optical networks is given. After that, the reliability of Optical Cross-Connect devices, which play an important role in optical networks, is discussed and analyzed. In addition, an analytical method of sensitivity is presented to assign the weights of the components in the optical networks. On the basis of shortest path, a reliability evaluating model for communication networks is created, and then the simulation results of reliability performance of a network by making use of this model are given. In the fifth chapter, the concept of survivability and the difference between reliability and survivability are introduced, and then, the development and some key technologies of the optical network survivability are evaluated.
