Combining the computer and image processing technology with traditional survey technique results in a revolutionary change in the field of survey. All kinds of new survey methods and instruments emerged like bamboo shoots after a spring rain. It is a tendency that digitalized survey instruments take the place of traditional ones.Leveling survey is a common survey method for latitude. It is very important in such fields as topographical survey, architectural construction, irrigation works and large scale sophisticated instruments installation. There are a lot of shortcomings in traditional optical leveling survey. It includes too intensive labor, low efficiency and difficult afterward data processing. So, it is significant to research the digitalization of leveling survey.But it is not easy to realize the digitalization of leveling survey because of its owner properties. International research on the digitalization of leveling survey started from 1980s. After twenty years' effort, hitherto, there are only a few companies who can produce digital leveling instrument. However they enclose their technology, there are scarcely datum about digital leveling instrument in public. Civil researches on it mainly focus on its using and precision appraisal etc. It is blank for work of the detail principle and concrete realization of digital leveling instrument.Under the background of digitalization of leveling survey, based on the edge detection technique for digital image, with the tool of theory of one-dimension digital signal processing, this paper researched profoundly the image positioning technology based on sinusoidal barcode, and apply it to the research on the automation of leveling survey. We also construct the experimentation platform and code the relevant signal processing software in the Visual C++. The test result indicates that the method put forward in the paper is theoretically correct and practically feasible. The research result lays a solid foundation for digital leveling instrument in theory.
