Barcode image positioning(BIP) based on machine vision technology has the qualities of objective reading, high precision and fast speed. It can conquer the defects of reading by eye which includes complicated reading procedure, long time reading, mistakes made by men, low automation. The technology has wide applications. It applies to all kinds of opto-electrical coders which are used for short distance and high precision measuring, it is also good for altitude, dam sinking, road's planeness measuring.The literatures of BIP's application that goes public is very limited because of the patent right. And the most classic application is water level. Based on the team's research of water level, the paper applys this technology to long distance visual micrometer. The writer made a deep research on the theory of barcode positioning and had a detailed measuring plan includes setting up the experiment devise, choosing of cameralens and sensor, designing and examining of barcode guage, designing of the software and hardware. It changed a lot on the base of water level and made it more appropriate for the system. The experiments proved the degree of stability reached 0.28μm and the definition of repetitiveness reached 1.376μm.The paper verified the rationality and superiority for the long distance visual micrometer using on the numerical control machine by analyzing the relative merits of position detectors that commonly used like inductosyns, coders and rasters. The writer also used the research vehicle standardized the hand-hold ranging laser sample produced by Chevon Corporation, and the measuring results turned out satisfying.
