The thermal imaging theory and the characteristics of infrared image are analyzed in this dissertation. Based on it, a number of theoretic algorithms of infrared image compression coding are explored. In the course of exploration, the application of vector quantization in the field of image coding and the wavelet theory of image are mainly studied. In this dissertation, we begin with the analysis of wavelet transform. After the analysis of infrared image wavelet coefficients, a vector quantization algorithm based on wavelet transform and the advanced one are proposed. The two algorithms are both realized by programming, and the results of the experiments are analyzed and compared, which shows that the proposed algorithms for infrared image compression can be feasible.
