In this paper,still image compression is studied.When the image is decomposed bydiscrete wavelet transform,the same direction yet different resolution subimages have asimilarity.Based on this similarity,a still image classified vector quantization scheme ispresented.The main concepts about wavelet transform and vector quantization areintroduced.How to use the Mallat algorithm in image coding is introduced .The energydistribution of subimage coefficients and the similarity of subimages are discussed.Inthis paper, the zerotree of wavelet transform coefficients is discussed too.Based on all ofabove,a still image classified vector quantization scheme based on wavelet transform isproposed.Through the compute simulation about head images and microscope-medicalimages,the better image compression effect is proved.
