Differing from the traditional communication networks that we know, Wireless Self-Organizing Network can be deployed rapidly and conveniently without existing network infrastructure. The wireless routing protocol is the key of wireless self-organizing networks. IETF has founded a working group(MANET) to study the routing protocols for multi-hop wireless networks. MANET has proposed several kinds of routing protocols for multi-hop wireless networks. To implement a multi-hop wireless communication network with capability of self-organizing is the primary purpose of the National Hi-Tech Program, Wireless Self-Organizing Network Technologies and Design. Differing from the MANET Ad hoc network, this project designs a hierarchical wireless network architecture. Nodes of this kind of network are divided into two hierarchy ,the upper, which is composed of Wireless Routers(WR), is the backbone of the network and the lower is the access layer, which is composed of Wireless Hosts(WH). The multi-hop routing protocol runs only on WR; thus the routing protocol cost is reduced, so this kind of architecture is adapted to larger wireless self-organizing network. As a part of the project, this paper proposes a new kind of multi-hop wireless routing protocol, Kernel Tree Routing Protocol(KTRP). The protocol is not only designed to grant the demand of Mobile Ad hoc network, but also adapted to hierarchical wireless network architecture. We analyze the existing MANET routing protocol and propose the KTRP in chapter 1 and chapter 2 of this paper. Then we discuss the algorithm and the details of KTRP in chapter 3 and 4. Chapter 5 is about how to implement KTRP in a wireless router and the experimentation of KTRP software in a real network environment is described in chapter 6.
