With the development of electronic computer and information technology, the identification technology using biometric have drawn more attention. Due to the uniqueness and invariability of fingerprints, the automated identification based on fingerprints is becoming an attractive alternative to the traditional methods of identification. However, there is much special noise in fingerprint images, and many methods wouldn't be publicized, so an ideal automated fingerprint identification system (AFIS) is still a difficult research subject.Under the background, we introduce the development history and application background of identification technology using biometric, and introduce the developments, applications and research status of AFIS. After gathering and classifying information, we researched the key method of new fingerprint identification methods and the key technology, which is image preprocessing, and proved performance of the algorithm, and applying it on Mobile Fingerprint Identification System. We optimized the algorithm properly, and designed a fingerprint identification terminal based on DSP (Digital Signal Processor). In this paper, we presented the design process of this terminal, including the hardware design and the fingerprint's preprocessing, binarization, thinning, center hunting, and so on. Test result shows that our designed terminal may meet the requirement of identifying fingerprints. In the work of designing this terminal I mainly do some work in the software designing of system's preprocessing, the soft terminal's realization in PC, and the system's debugging and testing.
