Bluetooth is a technology developed for short-range wireless communication by Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG). The purpose of Bluetooth technology is to replace the cable and connect various devices. It can establish point to point & point to multi-point connection within 10 meters using 2.4GHz ISM frequency band for wireless communication. It can support the transmission of voice and data. The Bluetooth Specification developed by SIG defines rules for implementing Bluetooth in almost all the aspects and it's free. It includes two parts: Core Specification and Profile.Firstly, this thesis briefly explains the development, characteristic and application of Bluetooth technology. Secondly, it expatiates the hierarchical protocol architecture of Bluetooth technology, introduces and analyses Bluetooth Radio Frequency; Link Controller and Base-band, Link Management Protocol, Logical Link Control and Adaptation Protocol, Service Discovery Protocol, RFCOMM and so on, which illuminates the characteristics and applied conditions.Using Ericsson Bluetooth module ROK101008, the problem encountered on the progress of design and implementation is discussed. Using the module as replacing the wire on the sea going ships, we made three boards: a digitized gyro signal board, a signal processing board and a radio board with 2.4GHz antenna. The course and rotating data can be displayed on the wireless compass using the HCI connection to the Bluetooth Module. In the experiment, the true heading and ROT (rate of turn) data can be displayed on the wireless compass using the Ericsson Bluetooth Module ROK101008 and the other two boards made in this thesis.Part of our fruit has been used on the merchant vessels to match the International Standard as AIS and VDR connection.
