The audio communication based on IP network has offered a new convenient but low-cost approach to helping people communicate each other over long distances. At the beginning of the thesis, IP multimedia communication is presented briefly. Then the influence of the key technology of multimedia communication on IP telephony is analyzed and some details of the H.323 protocol which is widely used in multimedia communication are presented. Afterwards, the thesis outlines H.323-based IP telephone system and gives a holistic analysis and description of the basic ideas of its framework and the organization of its function modules. The design of varieties of Gatekeeper modules are presented and in practically, the transitions of Gatekeeper states and its process of calling are described in details. In the thesis an actual IP telephone system in campus is introduces. A detailed description of the ideas for the system and some methods of how to realize it are given. At last, the Softswitch technology is presented in the thesis, based on which H.323 protocol and SIP protocol are compared and the differences between them are given.
