Nowadays the processing speed of CPU has been being higher and higher, and the capability of the external memory has been increasingly greater. As a result, the higher performance of computer bus has been demanded. Because of higher speed, better reliability, lower cost, and more excellent compatibility, PCI bus has taken up the leading position at various PC BUS protocols. It is the first choice to adopt PCI bus in the development of relative projects. VxD is a new generation driver advocated by Microsoft Inc. Moreover, it is an alternative with higher efficiency under Windows98. People, therefore, don't have to resort to WDM programming because it is more complex and the running speed is lower. Consequently, both designing a PCI board under Windows98 and the research into the PCI protocol and the VxD driver are necessary. What's more, the practical value of the job is significant.This paper comes from the Cloud Platform controlling board, which is a part of HD_VCR Video Monitoring System. Because the distance between the monitor station and the Cloud Platform is too long for RS-232 to cover, we develop a PCI-485 interface board. Usually, the PCI protocol is very complex and uneasy to understand, so we adopt a PCI bus interface chip-S5920 produced by AMCC Inc.The board has showed excellent performance in the practical applications such as the Cloud Platform controlling system, and gun regulating system etc. At the same time it only needs little alteration when used in other similar industrial controllingsystems.
