Ultrasonic Bio-instrumentation is a kind of diagnostic instrument widely used in the clinic presently. It can examine the body by the scan of ultrasonic beam and display it by the brightness of ultrasonic echoes and then form the profiles of viscera and pathological changes.Ultrasonic Bio-instrumentation has several display modes used in medicinal field now, such as B-mode and M-mode, etc. B-mode uses the modulated brightness to represent the amplitudes of ultrasonic echoes, and the coordinates in the formed profiles correspond to positions of ultrasonic beam scans one by one. M-mode is a kind of dynamic display mode. It also uses the brightness to represent the strength of the ultrasonic returns, but the independent variable in the display is time. Returns from different scanned depths are revealed along the time axis to show the movement of different layers of the scanned organs. M-mode is often used to examine the heart, for example measuring the diameter of vascular, examining the valve, etc. So M-mode is an important aid to the doctor in examining the heart.The work in this thesis is based on the combination of medicine-ultrasonics and the image processing. With the computer as an platform, several kinds of processing were conducted on the B images of hearts captured in clinic, such as image enhancement and edge detection. And pertinent information from the B images were extracted and used in synthesizing the M images of the heart in arbitrary directions.This thesis mainly consists of four parts. Firstly, to enhance the B images captured in clinic, processing was carried out in different ways, including in the transformed domain, via the spatial-domain filter, and pseudo-color processing. And then performance among these methods was compared. Secondly, for the image edge detection, methods including the gradient method, the sharp-processing method, and the Hough transformation were used, and the contour tracing was also conducted. Then, in M-Mode processing part, an algorithm for synthesizing the M images was proposed and the images were processed correspondingly. Finally, a software package developed by the author was introduced. In this software, we realized the functions of image playing via multimedia, image processing, M-mode image synthesizing, measurement of organ parameters, and so on.To some extent, the work in this thesis will improve the performance of ultrasonic Bio-instrumentation currently used in clinic and help doctors make better diagnosis.
