With the development of the multi-medium and networks technology, people has put forward the higher requirement at quality dimension and application in digital image, wanting to use limited space and bandwidth resources to transmit a big image and according to the real needs to gain the reconfiguration image of different resolution or qualities. This will be begged that the image compression technology not only have good compression efficiency but also can handle nimbly the compression code rate.JPEG2000 is a new still image compression standard for adapting to image compression's widespread application. It give up the block coding style based disperse cosine transform, which is employed by JPEG. It employs Multi-Analyse coding style whose core is the wavelet transform. JPEG2000 has some characters, for example, high compression rate, lossless compression, lossy compression, discompression selection and so on. In a word, JPEG2000 is considered as the ideal resolution in the application of Internet.In this paper, we expand on the theorem and the implement process of the JPEG2000 image coding system, describe the basic algorithm and keyword technology in it, introduce this new standard's feature and application area, and on the base of the JPEG2000 compression standard we develop a software which can implement the compression of image, and analyse its function. As a conclusion, we testified that the JPEG2000 is more suitable and superior to the JPEG in image compression performance when applied in Internet.
