This paper introduces the basic concepts of GIS, including the GIS data organization, model and structure . It describes the structures and characteristics of the several popular GIS platforms. GRASS (Geography Resource Analysis Support System) is one of the most important GIS platform in this paper. The paper analyzes the structure of GRASS'S vector files and several basic indexes' methods for spatial data.lt also compares the characteristics of the PostGIS, Peegree, OpenMap, etc.On the other hand, mis paper researches the spatial vector data index arithmetic. It particular studies the R-Tree basic arithmetic, compareing with other index arithmetic.Some kinds of index arithmetic's model is introduced in this paper.Based on the technology and principle above, a experiment system was developed by the author. It provides the clew and method of building R-Trees index based on GIS platform. Also, this paper introduces a strategy of implement of R-Trees based on GRASS platform.
