Researchers designed and implemented video switch by wide-band small relays .It was complicated, had bad performance, and couldn't run reliably. In recent years, they have designed 16×8 wide-band video cross-point switch matrices by employing 4×1 precision video multiplexer MA×4141. It has good performance, but the cost is high. Great capabilities of switch matrices make it necessary for us to research into the modular design scheme in order to expand capabilities of switch matrices and improve their performance.The paper analyzes two modular xlesign schemes, and discusses their characteristics and applications. The building block design scheme is basal because the I/O ports can be fully configured. The other one based on the building block design scheme can satisfy the different needs in various application fields. Moreover, the video signal channel bandwidth, crosstalk isolation and harmonic distortion are described in detail. The advanced IC AD8110 is used in the design and implementation of the video switch matrices modular. At the same time CPLD technology is adopted to produce all kinds of controlling signals and reduce the volume and the power consumption.In comparison with video switch matrices designed by our workgroup before, the video switch matrices modular have better performance, and its cost is lower. Especially, harmonic distortion has been fully researched which our workgroup has not touched before.
