The Book of Song Dynasty, by Shen Yue of the Liang Dynasty, is a good paragon of the historic studies about the Southern Dynasties and has extraordinary value in the historic and linguistic research. Some achievements in research could be found as early as in the Song dynasty. But most previous results were focused in historical facts correction and words collation, not on version recognition and words explanation. This dissertation tries to develop a comprehensive research about The book of Song Dynasty in version recognition, collation and words explanation, in order to achieve some results for the research of middle ancient Chinese.This article consists of three parts:1. Version recognition. First, the history of existing versions of the book is introduced. Then based on the study of San-Chao Version(三朝本), Bai-Na Version(百衲本) , Ju Version (局本) and Dian Version (殿本) , we get four conclusions as follows: (1) Bai-Na Version is the basic version for Biao Dian Version(标点本); (2) Some revisions were made when Bai-Na Version was copied to San- Chao Version, thus they are different versions; (3) The collation work for Bai-Na Version is unsatisfactory;(4) Ju Version is the best version.2. Collation. We applied Dui Jiao (对校) ,Ben Jiao (本校) ,TaJiao (他校) and Li Jiao (理校) approaches to the collation work and got 27 errors from perspectives of wrong words, derivative words, missing words, punctuations and so on.3. Words Explanation. We chose nine common words from the book to study with reference to other documents. Those words are missed from the widely used dictionaries, or interpreted incorrectly. The work consists of three parts: (1) New meanings of some ancient words, such as "Zi Yi" (自疑) ; (2) New words and new meanings, such as "Zhang Xia" (帐下) ; (3) Correcting some wrong meanings in The Chinese Dictionary, such as "Can Shen" (参审) .
