This paper studied the yarn arrangement rules of two-step 3D braided prefoms with a combined rectangle section, and developed a computer aided design system for two-step 3D Braiding with Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0. At present, the process design and manufacture of 3D braided preforms still depend on handworks, the development of this CAD system has great importance in practice undoubtedly. The project was focused on several aspects as follows:1. The yarn arrangement rules of two-step rectangle 3D braided preforms were investigated on the purpose of coding easily. Based upon it , we drew the rules of two-step 3D Braided performs with a combined rectangle section.2. By using computer program, the process parameters of two-step 3D braided performs can be calculated automatically.3. According to the requirements of design ,the system can set the layout of axial yarns automatically, and then deploy braider yarns automatically based upon it.4. The system can build process file according to the layout of slab. This file describe the positions and movement orders of all braider yarns. It can be transformed from a text file into signals to drive the automatic two-step braiding machine to work.5. The system developed two 3D animated drawings to simulate the movement of slab and braiding process of 3D two-step braiding. In this paper, the shape of slab can only be made up by rectangles. In fact, the system can design complex polygon slab by rectangle combination. As for tubular performs, the system can design it approximately too.The system is the first one of 3D two-step braiding CAD systems. It's innovational and makes the foundations for full automation of 3D two-step braiding.
