Iris recognition, a kind of biological characteristic recognition, springs up as a result of the social and economical development, and it shows great advantages. For example, the characteristics of one"s iris are steady all one' s life, the capturing of iris image is non-invasive, and issues of iris possess the characters of living issues on account of the zooming process of pupils, which prevents counterfeiting.The image capturing, image transmission and image processing of iris recognition systems are expatiated in this paper. Iris images are captured with CMOS black-and-white digital camera. Then data are transmitted from camera to host computer by USB interface. After that, the center of iris inner circle is gotten with gray-level projecting, and curving fitting is performed after a certain number of points on the iris inner and outer edges are found by edge detection and neighborhood judgment, so that the iris is segmented. Finally, the correlating indexes are calculated to make the decision. Experimental results show the speediness and feasibility of this approach.Both the hardware and software of iris recognition system are discussed in details. The software includes the USB communication component (the embedded program based on AN2131, EZ-USB driver and host computer communication program) and the image processing programs in Windows environment. The hardware includes the CMOS black-and-white digital camera OV7110 and the EZ-USB chip AN2131.
