Target detection is the key point of modern military technology. In general,the research of this problem focuses on two backgrounds. The first one is ground background,which means to keep watch on the low altitude airborne targets or targets on the ground from the airborne look-down system such as the satellite system. The other is sky background,which means to keep watch on the targets in the sky from the low altitude airborne system or the system on the earth. Because sky is the main battlefield of today and future,the research of the targets detection in the sky background will not end,and yet conversely,it will continue developing in the antagonism. Only if we put more and more effort on the research of this area today,can we win the battle in the future. This article mainly discusses target detection problem in sky background.This article has four chapters.In the first chapter,the difficulties of small target detection and a few representative methods are summarily introduced and also a comparison of these methods is made. In the end of this chapter,the flow chart used in this article is given.In the second chapter,the Mathematical Morphology is used to the target detection problem. First,a background estimator using gray morphologic open operation is proposed. Second,a small target detection method based on the gray morphologic Top-Hat transform is put forward.In the third chapter,a classic MFD method is discussed:the high order correlation method. This method has lower computational requirements and uses fewer frames for detection. It exploits the consecutive temporal and spatial dependencies of the points on a track to distinguish them from background clutter.In the last chapter,the experimental results and concluding remarks are obtained. The work scheme of the future on the target detection research in sky background is also reported.
