Face recognition technology ( FRT) is front-line task in pattern recognition domain, which has extremely extensive applications, Thus, the study of the technology has given rise more and interests for searchers in pattern recognition and artificial intelligence, Face detection is the basic prophase work of the face recognition technology, its impact directly decides the power of recognizing facesIn this paper, Research background of automatic face recognition and its relation to human vision system are briefly reviewed. Next, this paper addresses a number of important issues in face detection: in the preprocessing step, a new edge detection method based on a mended Sobel operator is proposed; Others, as a importance content, we bring up a fast method that can remove the unimportant edge line and noise line in the edge image; An edge direction based template is proposed to model the face contour, then our method can be effectively used for images with various pattern faces and complex backgrounds; We get the part character through analyzing the part gray-level character of faces, at the same time, get the precision position; II segments high gray-level region and low gray-level region in order to localize facial features in segmented regions, first localizes the vertical position of chin, mouth, nose, and eyes with gray-level projection, then localizes the horizontal position of them in associated vertical positionso In this method, nose is first localized to aid other features'localization, Compared with conventional methods, our system is found to be more robust to noise and head pose variations.At last, based on the analysis and comparison , key factors in face recognition technologies are concluded and distilled as suggestion to future research.
