Based on the advanced technologies of digital communication, source and channel coding, Digital High Definition Television (Digital HDTV) has been one of the focuses of the world's competition in high technology, and it would gradually substitute the existing analogue television system.. Currently, HDTV system has stepped out from scientific research phase and into a commercial phase in the global world. And also, in our country, researches in HDTV system and applications have accomplished many achievements.The paper discusses the part of ASIC design of TCM (Trellis Coded Modulation) in HDTV 8VSB terrestrial channel broadcasting receiver chip. In testing, the TCM can improve the Signal-to-Noise by 3.3dB compared with uncoded 4-VSB modulation, and with the 12 path intrasegment interleaving in TCM coding and Viterbi decoding, system can control short burst noise error efficiently. The contents of this paper have included HDTV system information, system on chip design, TCM coding , Viterbi decoding and it's system perfomance. With the outer coder (Reed-Solomen coding), the HDTV receiver chip can attain 14.9dB in Signal-to-Noise.
