To improve the reliability of the excitation control system, a dual microcomputer excitation regulator (DMER) has been manufactured with Intel 80C196KC single chip microcomputer and Fuzzy-PID control technology in this paper. At first, the character of fuzzy control and the design of fuzzy controller are expounded in detail, and a Fuzzy-PID excitation controller for synchronous generator is designed. The experimental result shows that this excitation controller has the better regulating character comparing with traditional PID excitation controller. Secondly, the paper analyzes in detail the constitution of hardware circuit of DMER and its software design. In data acquisition unit, a PTS AC sampling algorithm is used, which can simplify the external circuit so as to increase the reliability of the circuit greatly. The digital phase-shifted part is made up of PLL CD4O46 two timer/counter 8253 and correlative components. And it costs C1U little time and has bigger distinguishing ratio about triggering angle. At the same time, this circuit can trace frequency changing of power system automatically. The switch unit of the dual microcomputer and fault detection which are the crucial components of DMER are also presented detailedly. And their hardware ciruit is also designed. Besides these, a dual microcomputer tracing scheme is adopted in software, and it can switch to the spare machine automatically and has no effect on power system when the working machine breaks down .At last, the source of interfering and its harm to excitation regulator are analyzed in detail, and the practical measures to resist the interfering are explained in the paper.
