Marine Control System is a rather complicated network. The choice of network model and management technology exerts a great influence on the performance of the system. Probing into the major network management technologies, this paper introduces a novel design of network management in relation to topology architecture, management model, management architecture and performance monitoring. On the basis of such analysis, it is suggested that Hybrid-network topology architecture, Combined network management model and Integrated network management be employed in the Marine Control System. In network topology architecture, Hybrid architecture other than Bus architecture is exploited, that is, a ring architecture is established in the main network, while Ethernet and Bus architecture in the subnet. As Token ring has dual rings, it displays better fault-tolerant capacity than that of Bus architecture. Employing tokens to pass protocols, token ring is once again a better choice as compared with Bus using CSMAICD in real time.So far as network management style is concerned, a novel Synthetic network management is provided, as both Centralized management and Distributed management have their own seemingly insolvable disadvantages. Distributed management is weak in that it will be difficult to change after the operational phase has started the functionality that makes the management decisions. This is because such changes require the modification of a large number of network systems, which will certainly result in a low working efficiency. Centralized management, however, is not immune from criticize. A network managed this way may get out of total control even after failure of a single manager. Combining the merits of the two models, Synthetic network management is highlighted in the paper. With regard to network management architecture, Integrated architecture is invented. In the past, primary network function is not a part of network management functions. Though this architecture has some virtues, it still suffers from a number of problems. This thesis, therefore uses an alternative approach, in which the designer considers the complete set of requirements from the outset in an integrated way.In network management program developing, Cycle design is provided. The idea of cyclic design is to distribute design problems over a sequence of design cycles, allowing it to exploit design experience obtained in previous cycles while performing the next. For the purpose of evaluating the performance of the main network of the system under discussion, this thesis also puts forward a mathematic token ring model based on the theory of Queuing, whose accuracy has been tested and proved by means of virtual computer examination. The last part of the thesis is an application of the above-mentioned technologies to Marine Control System and gives an introduction to the communicative and monitoring performances of the Marine Hybrid architecture.
