Recently, with the rapid development of the computer, network and communication technologies, the amount and types of information are booming over the Internet day by day. How to get the reqLlired information from this huge multimedia library is becoming a very important subject, to which more and more attentions have been paid by scholars around the world. According to this requirement, design and implementation of multimedia database are investigated in this thesis in detail. Firstly, introductions to the generation of MPEG-7, the proposed new international standard, are given. Then, feature definition, representation and retrieval forms in MPEG-7 as well as its application in multimedia database are discussed. Secondly, comprehensive comparisons of several typical multimedia data models are given, which include hierarchical model, relational model, algebraic model and general video model. After that, a new attribute dispersed model is presented. By the integration of hierarchical structure, independent representation model based human-machine interaction and other techniques, the given model is more reasonable and efficient in the management, organization, retrieval and expansion of multimedia database. Thirdly, the design and realization of multimedia database based on the presented model are also given in depth, in terms of plug-in, categorized information organization, data storage and multi-modal interface. Moreover, several related technologies are also discussed, such as multimedia server planning, network configuration, file system support, and etc. Finally, the application prospect and future trend of multimedia database are approved in the summarization of the whole thesis.
