The contemporary theory of metaphor represented by Lakoff and Johnson who wrote The Metaphors We Live By in 1980 claims that metaphor is an important means of thinking rather than a linguistic phenomenon. Metaphor is cognitive in nature by which human understands the material world. Furthermore, conceptual metaphor allows human to understand a comparatively abstract concept in terms of a more concrete concept systematically. However, linguistic metaphors can show our underlying systematic conceptual metaphors. So, it is worthy to study and analyze conceptual metaphor on the basis of linguistic expressions. Therefore, this paper aims at conduct a comparative study to analyze war metaphor of Chinese and English sport news reports and compare their similarities and differences, in hoping of making a little contribution to the cognitive theory of metaphor from the view of a Chinese student. In addition, this paper is synchronic.During detailed study, the paper finds out that there are large amounts of war metaphor in both Chinese and English sport news reports. However, war metaphor in Chinese sport news reports are richer than that in English. There are two reasons: one is historical cause and the other is different thinking mode. The author of this paper hopes that the comparison between Chinese and English war metaphor in the sports news reports can provide another evidence for conceptual metaphor in which abstract concepts are largely formed and comprehended via metaphor, i.e., conceptual metaphor is cognitive in nature, and bears different characteristics and collocations of each culture.
