As a well-known "Triple A" specialist hospital in hepatobiliary surgery, Shanghai Eastern Hepatobiliary Surgery Hospital has accumulated extensive and valuable clinical data. However, most data is currently disorganized and much information needs to be entered manually and stored as paper documents, revealing a poor quality of data. As the clinical data growing large, current database cannot meet the demands a real-time and fast data analysis. Moreover, it is difficult for un-trained clinical researchers to retrieve useful data. Therefore, it is urgent for the hospital to establish an independent clinical Data Warehouse of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), facilitating a more efficient and unified management of massive data and providing the most useful information based on the need of clinical researchers for reference of their decision making.Gencral speaking, the current status and problems in HCC clinical database of our hospital is firstly discussed, suggesting an urgent necessity of establishing the Data Warehouse System of HCC. Then, the diagnosis and prognosis of primary HCC patients is chosen as the main category of the Data Warehouse, based on analyzing the needs for HCC monitoring, prevention and treatment in clinical investigations. Further, the model design of data warehouse, the dimension’s granularity and the ETL process using Microsoft SQL Server2008Integration Services (SSIS) tools are discussed. Moreover, the data automation cleaning processes and frameworks to ensure the data quality control and dirty data processing in the ETL process are showed clearly. Finally, the features and shortcomings of this Warehouse in Eastern Hepatobiliary Surgery Hospital are discussed.
