Taken the view of the political economy of communication, this article studies ethnographic participation in order to observe the fan subbing group in mainland China. These fan subbing group members voluntarily translate European and American television episodes by inserting subtitles. Relying on the fist-hand material, this research focuses on the fan subbing group’s production procedure.Fan subbing group is a production-oriented organization. With the help of internet, fan subbing group can absorb and train its member-workers, who have given their free labor to translate. It seems that the work of fan subbing group is a kind of leisure, while it still cannot get rid of the impact of the business logic, which should be recognized by the workers themselves.
