Lasers operating in the eye-safe wavelength around 1.6μm have wide applications and bright prospect in many fields such as laser remote sensing, lidar and free space laser communication, etc. Among various of approaches lasing around 1.6 um, the in-band pumped Er:YAG laser pumped by Er, Yb co-doped double-clad fiber laser, which lases at a wavelength of 1645 nm with quite narrow linewidth, high conversion efficiency and good beam quality, might be the optimal. As operation material of solid-state laser, transparent ceramic has a lot of advantages compared with the traditional single crystal or glass, which is a kind of excellent laser material with bright application prospect. This text focuses on the research program of 1.6μm in-band pumped Er:YAG ceramic laser. Before the experimental research, some theoretical research including cavity design and rate equation analysis are carried out to discuss the impact of several parameters on laser performance. In the experiment, we achieve continuous laser output at 1645 nm with the highest power of 4.9 W, corresponding to a slope efficiency of 52%. The M2 parameter for the output beam was measured to be about 1.15. Laser output characteristic on the condition of different doping concentration of Er:YAG ceramic or different transmittance of output mirror are also measured and discussed, which can provide some reference in practical application.
