Three dimensional (3D) displays have drawn much attentions of the world for many years. Researchers have developed many kinds of 3D displays till now, but the researchers' enthusiasm on 3D displays has not dissipated, on the contrary, more devices with much more excellent performance have been made. One of them, a stereoscopic 3D display based on spliced view-field becomes new research focus, which can display 3D images like holographic images with hidden effects. The systems using this method have to contain a projector array and a directional diffuser. Theoretically, the number of viewpoints of the system can be enlarged easily by adding more projectors and the angular pitch between two adjacent viewpoints is very small, which is good for reducing the observers'visual fatigue. This thesis proposes a new stereoscopic 3D display based on spliced view-field, including horizontal-only-parallax method and full-parallax method, and make two demonstrations using these two methods separately. In the beginning, the theory of stereo vision is introduced, and the history of 3D displays is reviewed. And then, a new method for classification of 3D displays and is proposed, and this leads to our 3D display method based on spliced view field. The second chapter is about deep studies on the method of the stereoscopic 3D display based on spliced view-field, including horizontal-only-parallax method and full-parallax method. The relationship between the projector array parameters and the directional diffuser parameters is worked out, which could be the basis of system design. Besides, researches on the directional diffuser and 3D display performance are involved. The third chapter shows a demonstration of horizontal-only-parallax 3D display which could display 3D images with 49 horizontal views, and the producing processes: system design (optical and mechanical parameters),3D images capturing and processing. The forth chapter shows a demonstration of full-parallax 3D display which could display 3D images with 45 views including 9 horizontal views by 5 vertical views, and the producing processes:system design (optical and mechanical parameters),3D images capturing and processing. At the end of the thesis, the conclusion and future research direction are given.
