Three dimensional (3D) displays have drawn numerous attention from the world for many years. Even researchers have developed various kinds of3D displays till now, their enthusiasm on3D displays has never dissipated. Recently,3D display principle based on light field reconstruction, which is proposed by computer science field, has leaded the latest research revolution. The advantages it owns, including naked eye observation, large viewing field, correct occlusion and viewable for a number of people at the same time, make it an advanced display technology that more suitable to represent the real scene.In this paper, the spliced view-field approach and light field reconstruction principle are combined expected to achieve large scale or large viewing field light field3D display. The principle of light field reconstruction is proposed and analyzed in detail, as well as the design requirements of display zone in cylindrical space. The relation between the parameters of spliced projection array and parameters of directional diffuser is figured out based on the discussion on system establishment. According to the principle analysis given, two experimental prototypes have been proposed separately to validate the light field display principle, one is multi-projectors based, another is LCD-based projection style. The experimental results demonstrate that this display approach can achieve large scale3D effect with smooth motion parallax in large viewing angular field. The process of prototype establishment, including parameters’design, configuration of optical and mechanical components, and image generation, are then discussed specifically in this paper. From the perspective of enlarging the application of existing display system, a3D display used interaction device based on infrared structure light is then proposed. Taking consideration of the imaging performance and actual requirements of existing3D displays, we design the interaction algorithm and gestures. And the interaction experience experiments are implemented. With the development of3D display, imaging performance improvement and display image evaluation are gradually focused on. Here we have investigated two image calibration methods based on point-to-point mapping and PDLC photonic switch, respectively. With the calibrations implemented into the proposed display prototypes, the fineness of splicing and imaging quality have been improved a lot. In the field of image measurement and evaluation in light field3D display, we mainly investigate the stereo and motion parallax, display brightness, view-field uniformity and crosstalk, imaging performance in depth, the tradeoff between spatial resolution and angular resolution, and approach of dynamic display. With the research on light field display combined with principle analysis, imaging simulation and experiments on prototypes, we find out that there are potential deserved to be improved in further research.Hope this paper could help to make some references for further research on light field3D display.
