The bloom of the technology of wireless communication gives rise to Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANET). Meanwhile, as a typical kind of MANET, Vehicle Ad hoc Networking (VANET) attracts more and more attention for its widely application in life. There are two branches of the research work for the application of VANET, one is the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) and the other is Drive-thru applications.The goal of ITS is try to provide some novel solutions for safe transportation or to improve the efficiency of transportation. And ITS try to achieve this goal by harness the communications between nodes of VANET or node to infrastructure. When mention about research work for ITS, people either try to supply a more efficient solution for public transportation or to minimize the loss of the traffic accident. For instance, if an accident has taken place on highway, the accident car would back diffuse this message for the rest cars on this road segment. Another example of improving the efficiency of public transportation is that the car nodes of VANET can exchange information of traffic condition of their own road segments. And with that information, a more wise travel plan can be made.The other point of research work for the application of VANET is Drive-thru research, and people try to provide some entertainment services for drivers, such as they can download some fresh pop music from Internet, which can be done by the wireless links between car nodes and Access Points (APs) on the roadside.The research of data collection for VANET is one of basic job for the field of the application of VANET. Therefore, data collection is very important not only for problem of Drive-thru related, but transportation issue, especially for the travel plan or improving the safety of public traffic. For the Drive-thru application, the researchers care most is how to facilitate automobile drivers with limited bandwidth. Data collection always plays a very significant role in those applications. Sometimes, the information of the road location, and flow of the traffic can help us to make a more time-saved travel plan. And data collection is also necessary for some other application of ITS. In this dissertation, two examples have been proposed base on the two branches of VANET application. Of course, we focus on the role of data collection in those two application cases. And the main job of data collection including gather the information of vehicle flow, vehicle density, and the fingerprint of radio frequency of APs along the roadside, etc. And with those data, we can design a time-saved travel plan for car drivers first and then enlarge the coverage of AP.
