Sichuan College Enrollment Problems And Countermeasures

Abstract/Summary:
The the enrollment of students in Chinese higher educational institutions has seen a continuous expansion in the recent decade. This number has reached more than 18,840,000 in the year of 2007 with a rate of 23%, which marks that China has formally entered the stage of popularization of higher education, a historical leap-forward. This historical achievement will signifcantly contribute to the modernization of Chinese nation and hence greatly improve the quality of talents training and international competitiveness, and consequently, the national rejuvenation. However, this leap-forward inevitably brings about a lot of questions for higher education.Based on the actual development of higher education in China, this paper specially take the case of Sichuan Province as an example to probe into the historical cause and effect of the Enrollment Expansion and motives so as to offer a comprehensive, coordinated and sustainable development paradigm for the higher education in China, which will lead to its better promotion of the modernization of the country.This article is divided into five parts:The first part focused on the historical inevitability of the expansion of China's higher education. This includes a comprehensive analysis of the objective reasons for the expansion, the significance of expansion, expansion of functions, expansion of our country's historical role in the development of higher education.The second part is an overview of our country's higher educational situation of Sichuan Province after the expansion of higher education development. The status quo of higher education in Sichuan province is evaluated from the following persepctive as: higher education gross enrollment rate, funding system for higher education, reform of higher educational paradigm, scale and quality enhancement of teachers and students, changes in the major structures and settings of colleges and universities etc.The third part focuses on the historical motive for the expansion of higher education of Sichuan province. This mainly includes the opportunites brought by China's western development policy, thanks to which the economy in Sichuan has sustained a rapid development. This helps to bring a strong demand for higher education;The fourth part is an analysis of the problems posed by the expansion of higher education in Sichuan province. The fact is that the educational resources can not satisfy the high speed of the development of higher education. The hardware in the higher educational setting lags behind economic and social development. The quality of the teaching staff and the employment situation of college graduates also poses threat to the situation.The last part tries to propose suggestions to the sound development of the higher educational system in Sichuan province. A series of measure are suggested as following: improving the expenditure on education; encouraging multi-channel financing so as to realize the diversification of investment in education; scientifically and rationally adjusting the structure of disciplines; focusing on teacher training and supervision so as to improve teaching quality; building a better employment services system, etc.
