Xiangxi (west Hunan ) is a beautiful and mysterious land where a special group—Waxiang (not yet recognized by the state) lives. Their customs (clothes, food, housing, farming) are different from those of the local Han, Miao and Tujia ethnic. According to these cultural characteristics from the perspective of ethics, this paper makes an in-depth discussion on: the origin of the clan and the unique cultural view of Waxiang; background of the formation of Waxiang's moral conception from bad living environment, interaction of the backward mode of production with the Han, Miao and Tujia ethnic; conception of good and evil that those who comply with heaven, principle and emotion prosper and those who do not are doomed to fail; heroic conception that one should be unrestrained and frank, have a strong sense of obligation, feel shame of weakness and uselessness; conception of marriage that one should be romantic and free, cement old ties by marriage, stick to principle of "no marriage inside the patriarchal clan", regard men as superior to women; conception of living that one should be hardworking and thrifty, take delight in helping people, seek freedom, cherish life; conception of loyalty and filial piety that one should show honor to one's ancestors, show one's filial respect to one's parents, be loyal to one's leader, stick with friends. It also explores the transition of modern morality from conservative ideas to a cheerful disposition, from yearning for the past to welcoming new arrivals in the painful choice of tradition and reality.
