In the 1990s, as a language teaching approach and a language movement, whole language teaching is gradually applied to second-language teaching in America. However, in China there are few attempts in the application of this teaching approach to language education. This paper is intended to arouse public concern in this area and adopt an effective teaching approach to meet the needs of quality-oriented education.The present paper comments on the current situation of the traditional language teaching method and its existing problems, elaborates the theory of whole language approach and its importance, raises and explains the model of whole language teaching method. Combining with the practice, the paper states the application of the theory in the senior high school English teaching and thinks that the whole language teaching will be an effective teaching method. By introducing the whole language approach, summarizing its principle and its application in language teaching as well as some controversial issues on the whole language approach, it is suggested that some of the ideas from the whole language approach can be adopted as a remedy for the overemphasis on rules and rote learning in the English language teaching in our country.Generally speaking, the whole language teaching approach originates in English-speaking countries such as the United States. The application of the whole language teaching method to non-English speaking countries is far from an easy job. Based on several years' teaching experience, I just intend to share with you my understanding in whole language teaching and make my bits of contribution to current English teaching. I sincerely hope that our English language teaching will scale a new height with the efforts of the English teachers.
