Exploratory Data Analysis Methods And Applications

In 1997, American statistician Tukey published the book named "Exploratory Data Analysis". This book aroused the broad attention, became the first official publication of the exploration analysis. 80's later period, some Chinese statisticians introduced this book into the statistics field of our country. It helped our country statistics research and statistics enterprise development positively.Specifically, the exploratory data analysis (EDP) deals with some preliminary and chaotic data which were obtained by investigation and observation, under as few as possible first hypothesis. It is a data analysis way to explore the data structure and rules, through the form of drawing and tab, and the means in equation fitting and calculating some characteristic quantity .Together with the widespread application of the high-seed computer, EDP has brought in the new idea tidal current of the data examination, the analysis and the compression method.Exploratory data analysis was considered as an important contribution which influenced the statistics in 20^th century.After analyzing the present situation of the statistical theory development, this paper introduces the proposed background, its main thought and content to the exploratory data analysis method, emphatically elaborates the main statistical method to exploratory data analysis. At last the paper gives an example to explain the application of the exploratory data analysis method.The paper is made of three parts as following:The first chapter introduces the main thought to exploratory data analysis method, four subjects in analysis process: resistance, residuals, re-expression and revelation, and briefly discusses the present situation and prospect of exploratory analysis method.The second chapter mainly introduces the main technical method to exploratory data analysis. This is carried on the foundation of four main subjects in the first chapter. Finally it involves the robustness problem in statistical analysis.The third chapter uses exploratory data analysis method to analyze the quantitative relation between stock price and the turnover in our country stock market.
