In teaching English as a foreign language, more and more English teachers have realized the importance of teaching culture. But there are still some English teachers who pay too much attention to words, sentences and grammar which are taken as the dominant factors, being separated from the culture. In language teaching, we must know the textbooks well in order to do better in culture teaching. Nowadays, most junior school students in Shanghai use Oxford English. Therefore, the analysis of embedment of cultural factors in Oxford English for Junior middle school students in Shanghai may sketch an outline of the embedment of cultural factors, giving the direction to culture teaching for teachers, changing the chaos in culture teaching to certain degree. This kind of analysing is for the better attainment of the objectives of culture teaching in English Curriculum Criteria.This dissertation is made up of six chapters.Chapter One serves as an introduction, which gives a general account of the importance and feasibility of teaching culture, and the status quo of culture teaching, especially the problems in junior middle schools in China and the layout of this dissertation.Chapter Two describes the definition and classification of culture, analyzes the relationship between language and culture. Since culture diversity is the main cause of cross-cultural pragmatic failure, it studies the cultural differences in both verbal and nonverbal communication, and contrasts four pairs of cultural patterns in dominant American and Chinese cultures.Chapter Three is guided by the objectives, orientations, contents of culture teaching set up in English Curriculum . Criteria locates emphasis on the discussion of the embedment of cultural factors in Oxford English.Chapter Four expounds the principles of culture teaching in junior English as well as explores some ways of teaching culture in and out of English classes.Chapter Five provides an example of culture teaching and analyses it.Chapter Six examines the strength and weakness of Oxford English and gives some suggestions on culture teaching .
