Textbooks, as the learning resources and tools to students, are fundamental to teaching. With the reform in curriculum further on, being put into practice is the policy to diversify versions in textbooks under the guidance of National Curriculum Standards. Facing the diversified textbooks, how to analyze and evaluate the textbooks in reasonable and scientific way, becomes an important issue.This study selected two sets of English textbooks which is widely used in primary schools, that is "PEP Primary English" by People Education Press and "Oxford Primary English" by Yilin Press. Three research methods, documentary, comparative, analytical are adopted in this study. The thesis compares and analyses the surface-layer structure of the two sets of textbooks in some aspects, such as organization system, contents choosing, presentation and weaving level. At the same time, this research also makes a complete comparison and analysis in the aspect of deep-layer structure, which includes knowledge elements, language skill element, emotional and attitudinal elements, learning strategies elements and culture consciousness.At the end of the study, it makes some suggestions about the compilation of two sets of Primary English textbooks by comparing, and then makes general suggestions about the compilation of primary English textbooks.Suggestions for improvement of Oxford Primary English:1. Teaching materials should increase breadth, and the design should be full of flexible.2. Increasing repetition rate of language knowledge input, and the arrangement should have hierarchy.3. Integrate the unit module to develop the students’ability of metacognition.Suggestions for improvement of PEP Primary English:1. Reduce the difficulty of knowledge, focus on learning ability.2. Simplify the layout, focus on the beauty infiltration.Suggestions for English textbooks of primary schools:1. Perfect structure of teaching materials by practicing constructivism learning theory.2. Improve the teaching material content arrangement by the input hypothesis theory of the second language acquisition theory.3. Improve the teaching materials presentation by the advance organizer theory.
