China's Urban Street Girls Study

Vagrant girls are a vulnerable group most needing caring about and helping in the social life. For a long time they have been roaming about in the society and their living condition has been very abominable, which have adversely influenced the sound development of their body and mind. What's more, they have been confronted with more difficulties and trouble than vagrant boys in the course of roam.At present, the number of vagrant girls of our country probably varies from 20,000 to 45,000. So large as the number of the vagrant girls, domestic study on vagrant girls is still relatively weak at present. Some articles just briefly mention it in the analysis of street children, aiming at the characteristics of vagrant girls and the special way of succor providing no corresponding countermeasures. In addition, at present the succor of vagrant girls is still just part of the whole succor work of street children, and no effective succor methods or modes have been put forward in accordance with their physiological and psychological characteristics.From the aspect of social gender theory, this paper tries to make people notice vagrant girls, a group that has been neglected for a long time, notice the unequal situation, rights and interests and take measures to improve the status of vagrant girls through improving people's social sex consciousness. As far as the research approach is concerned, this paper adopts the quantitative questionnaire investigation method and qualitative case study approach, making every effort to describe and summarize their living conditions, the reasons for roam and the experience in the course of roam all-sidedly and accurately. Through an analysis of basic situation of vagrant girls, this paper has expounded the characteristics of vagrant girls, and has analyzed the reasons why they have left their home to roam in detail. Vagrant girls leaving home is the result of the reaction of factors of communities, families and the girls themselves. And the analysis of the reason for vagrant girls leaving home, we can find that a deeper reason for girls to go out and roam is that it is the result of the function of man-dominating patriarchy society. Finally, according to the analysis to vagrant girls' characteristics and the reasons for roam, I have proposed some countermeasures and suggestions with regard to the succor, protection and return of vagrant girls.
