With China opening up to the outside, trade and exchanges between China and other countries increase, English, as one of international languages is playing more and more important, role, English teaching, as part of quality education is increasingly concerned by people.Over the last twenty years the English teaching in middle schools has made great progress: the scale of teaching is expanded constantly, and the teaching level is improved continuously, teachers' quality is increased substantially etc. But we should also realize that the development of our English teaching can't meet the demand of the economical and social development, such as: we pay too much attention to the teaching of knowledge about language and neglect the training of language skills etc.Cooperative instruction is a magic tool in English teaching, which is a successful teaching strategy in which small teams, each with students of different levels of ability, use a variety of learning activities to improve their understanding of a subject. Each member of a team is responsible not only for learning what is taught but also for helping teammates learn, thus creating an atmosphere of achievement.Implementing cooperative instruction enables students to develop essential English communication skills, including the oral language skills involved in social interaction, such as listening, taking turns, making eye contact and using quiet voices. The abilities to elaborate, paraphrase, clarify, summarize, mediate and reach decisions, which are important aspects of successfully using different language modes, are all learned and reinforced through cooperative instruction.In a word, implementing cooperative instruction in middle school class can not only promote students' communicative competence but also lead to their advanced cognitive development.
