The purpose of this research is to explore the types of frustration and the ways of coping in private college freshmen. It is hoped that the findings can be utilized by the educators in the work of private college. Two inventories are included in the present research. The Frustration Situation Questionnaire (FSQ) is specially designed for this study. Results indicated that FSQ is a reliable and valid measure for assessing frustration. The Ways of Coping Questionnaire (3rd Edition) was used to assess the coping strategies of private college students. 270 private college students participated in the study and responded to both the questionnaires. The major findings are concluded as follow. First, the types of frustration in private college freshmen are frustration of interpersonal relationship, frustration of being punished, frustration of family matters, frustration of academic achievement, economic frustration, frustration of adaptation. Second, the private college students' frustrations of being punished and academic achievement are statistically significantly higher than the comparison group. The female students experienced more frustrations of self-esteem and academic achievement, whereas the male students suffered more from frustration of family matters. Finally, the private college students tend to employ coping strategies of problem solving and seeking-support. Specifically, the female students are more inclined to seek help from others than male students. On basis of the above results, the following suggestions are made: 1) it will be helpful to popularize education of frustration in private colleges, which focuses on interpersonal relationship, academic guidance and self-discipline etc. 2) a series of courses on coping skills will be meaningful to the individuals' mental health and full-development.
