As a kind of teaching and academic research institution, Academy has existed about one thousand years in ancient China. It grew up in Tang Dynasty, developed through Song. Yuan, Ming Dynasty and gone in to popularization stage in Qing Dynasty. However, academy was abolished along with the decline of the feudal system in the end.Yangzhou has a long history and historic celebrities. Academies in Yangzhou developed to the peak in Qing Dynasty. This thesis takes Academy education of Yangzhou in Qing Dynasty on as the object of the research, studying its develop history, analyzing the reasons, and researching the teaching activities in order to obtain enlightenment significances on the present education. This thesis can be divided into three chapters:In the first place, the essay gives a minute historical overview of the academics in Yangzhou and analyses the reasons for its development and change. Section one introduces the development of all the academics in Yangzhou. Section two analyses the reasons for academics’development and change. The political reason is that the academy policy decided its nature, mission and purpose. The economic reason is that Yangzhou’s salt industry was extremely flourishing. This is the characteristic feature of Yangzhou, causing the boom of academy in Yangzhou. The cultural reason is that Yangzhou has the long culture, attracting a large number of scholars. All of this provides a rich cultural atmosphere for the academy. Besides, academy in Yangzhou recruits famous scholars as teachers, which is the inner motivation.Next, the essay researches the teaching activities of academy in Yangzhou from the purpose of education, the content of education, the method of education and the evaluation of education. Academy in Yangzhou has three objects:attending examination of the imperial examination, cultivating morality, and carrying forward the academic. On the educational content, it teaches both examination knowledge and the academic knowledge. On the educational method, it pays attention to self-study, assistant instruction, asking questions and inspiration. On the educational evaluation, it implements the examination system and gives different awards according to the students’ academic achievements, which greatly improves students’ enthusiasm.Finally, the essay sumps up the characteristics of the academy education in Yangzhou and discusses the enlightenment significances. Academy education of Yangzhou in Qing Dynasty mainly has three features:one is that both paying attention to the imperial examination and the academic research; the second is that having a large number of famous teachers, developing many cultivated talents; the third is that going for self-studying. This paper combines ancient academy education and today’s education in order to obtain some comments. For example, orchestrating examination-oriented education with the quality education, improving the teachers’ teaching level and stimulating the students’ initiative spirit in order to learn to self-study.In a word, although the academy education of Yangzhou in Qing Dynasty has been the past, it still has value. Researching the academy education of Yangzhou is of great benefit to enrich the theoretical results and to provide reference on today’s education.
