Backwash refers to the effects that tests may have on teaching and learning, which has aroused attention of foreign language test and education since 1980 s. Now it has become a focus of language testing and language teaching. NMET is the most important selective test for high school students in our country. In domestic educational experts’ opinions, it has been the strictest and fairest test so far, and is paid most attention by the whole society. Reading comprehension takes more than one third of NMET, and is paid more attention by teachers and students.However, there is not much empirical research in backwash of NMET at home, especially in reading comprehension.The subjects are 12 teachers and 521 students from a senior high school of Yanzhou and the research instruments are document survey, classroom observation and interview. The author conducts quantitative and qualitative empirical research. Besides, the author designs the questionnaires for teachers and students. Then the author analyses backwash from teaching goals,teaching contents, teaching methods, teaching strategies and teaching attitudes. Besides, the author also analyses backwash from learning goals, learning contents, learning methods, learning strategies and learning attitudes. In order to make up the shortage of questionnaires, the author also makes classroom observation by selecting two teachers randomly. The contents of classroom observation include teaching goals, reading materials, teaching methods, teaching activities and homework. After the completion of statistical data, the author conducts a semi-structured interview. At last, the author makes the analysis by combing theoretical basis and the interview results.Research results show the following parts: firstly, English reading comprehension has positive backwash effects on teaching goals, teaching contents, teaching strategies and teaching attitudes. However, English reading comprehension has a certain degree negative of backwash effect on teaching methods. Secondly, English reading comprehension has positive backwash effects on learning contents, learning strategies, learning attitudes and learning methods. While English reading comprehension has a certain degree negative of backwash effect on learning goals.This study is innovative in the research contents, which pays more attention to teachers and students and provides some suggestions for the senior high school English reading teaching. This study also has limitations. The number and scope of the subjects are small and the research time is not long. In order to make up those deficiencies, the following studies should enlarge the number and the scope of the subjects and extend the research time.
