Picture book is popular with children for its rich, beautiful pictures and interesting,humorous or philosophical story. More and more kindergarten teachers like to take picture books as one important part of groups activities. However, in picture book teaching, there exists an problem: teachers are confused with what they should pay attention to in picture book teaching. Literature indicates that teachers or researchers pay more attention to language, moral and artistic value of picture books, but pay less attention to children’s reading ability. Reading ability, as one important activity in children’s future study, should be attached great importance, therefore, this study emphasizes focusing on reading ability in picture book teaching, and compare teaching effect between paying attention to reading ability with other concerns of picture book teaching through the experiment.This study compare teaching effect between picture book teaching focusing on reading ability and picture book teaching focusing on cognition from interests,reading ability, imagination. The subjects are 58 5-6 years old children from Puyang of Henan province. This study randomly determine two classes for experimental class and comparative class respectively. Teachers use the same nine picture books, and the teaching time is two months. Results of pre-test and post-test are achieved through statistical analysis. The actual circumstances of the teaching effect are achieved through qualitative analysis.The results of the study are as follows: picture book teaching of focusing on reading ability can improve children’s reading interest and reading ability obviously;but imagination of the two groups shows not difference. Picture book teaching of focusing on reading ability is more suitable for choosing interesting and more logical picture books; Picture book teaching of focusing on cultivating the reading ability can help maintain children’s reading interest because of related questions.This study aims at comparing the effect between picture book teaching of focusing on reading ability and some other picture book teaching. In addition, more researchers and teachers have to focus on children’s reading ability, to cultivate children’s ability of speculating, reflecting, and verifying stories in picture book teaching.
