Chemistry is a scientific discipline, the knowledge is abstract and complex, so it’s not easy to be understood. Fortunately, the range of chemistry is closely linked to the daily life, so analogy can be used as an effective way for solving chemical problem, as well as helping students understand chemistry in a more friendly way. But the choice about the content of analogy is crucial. A appropriate analogy do good help to students’ transition while it also do harm to students’ understanding for some abstract conception.This study attempts to investigate the occurrence of analogies in two chemistry textbooks. In this study, the analytical tool of the analogy will be divided into two dimensions, and it will be interpretated in each dimension. The selected textbooks are 8 Chinese chemistry textbooks of People’s Education Press and 1 American chemistry textbooks-- chemistry: concepts and applications, which is published by Glencoe company of McGraw Hill Education Press.The method used in this study is content analysis. The research type is based on a quantitative analysis and embedded a qualitative interpretation. Through the summary of domestic and foreign scholars’ definition of analogy, combining with the related research about the content analysis of analogies, the analysis model was established. The first analysis dimension of analogy was established into two parts: the extents and the characteristics. The second dimension was established from the first analysis dimension. From the data of the study,the following conclusion can be drawn:1.There are similarities and differences between the two sets of textbooks in two dimensions, especially in the dimension of the characteristics, the two sets of textbooks are not the same in the analog, the target and the relationship between them.2. The organization of analog content in the two sets of textbooks is similar, but the relationship and the level of the analogy between analog and target are different. From the view of the textbooks, whether on the analogy of the content’s complexity or the relationship between the levels of difficulty, MH chemistry textbook’s analogy is deeper than those of the Chinese edition of analogy.By the analysis of the two sets of textbooks in analogy and comparison to teach edition, I provide some references for reforming the chemistry textbooks in China.However, there are also some deficiencies in this study, and they can be constantly improved in future research.
