Abstract/Summary:
The educational thought that students are main subject with the lead of teachers is more and more recognized since the curriculum reform. School educaton, that is mainly implemented by means of classroom teaching, plays an important role in development of subjectivity of students. Conventional lecturing method is knowledge-oriented rather than capability-oriented, this method usually ignores the cultivation of students’ sentiments, attitudes and values. While discussion based method can meet these requirements for its superiorities and is adopted widely. How to evaluate the effectiveness of classroom discussion and how to improve it attract extensive attention.The state of the discussion based teaching method is investigated by literature survey, questionnaire and interview, and the problems in application are summaried. The influence of teachers, students and circumstances on the effectiveness of the method is analyzed in detail. Referring to the effective teaching evaluation indices, the effectiveness indices about discussion based teaching is proposed i.e. implementation of teaching goal, participation of students, duration of the discussion, adherence to topics, vitality of class, innovative thinking contribution, summary and communication. Furthermore, suggestions on how to improve the effectiveness of discussion teaching in three stages is made in respect of teaching elaboration.Before discussion, topics selection, groups allocation and start time shall be planed ahead elaborately. In discussion, goal of discussion and responsibilities of all participants shall be put forward. Teachers should keep a close eye on discussion development in case modification or correction shall be made. Extensive summary is an important part for an successful discussion. Afer discussion, all procedures shall be reviewed including the merits and demerits which will benefit for subsequent discussion teaching in experience. Make use of the indices and suggestions in two kinds of cases, a new lesson and a review lesson, the effectiveness is validated.
