With regard to the discussion of functions and purposes of formative evaluations at home and abroad, the point "providing stimuluses for teaching"lies at the centre. Compared with "what to evaluate" and "why to evaluate it", the styles of formative evaluation, i.e. with what method and what instrument to evaluate teaching, have been scarcely investigated. During the process of evaluation, the selection of effective methods and the formation of superior evaluation ways are vital issues that teachers need to consider carefully.The S-P chart evaluation method is based on formative evaluation, combined with a qualitative and quantitive studies, and closely connected with students and tests. The S-P chart method accords with teaching practice, which can diagnose the study results of students, and from the perspective of teachers, it facilitates searching various information with various methods based on teaching goals, judging teaching results evaluatively and adjusting teaching processes properly.Starting from teaching practice, this research, taking the example of revison lesson "DNA is a main genetical substance", investigates the application of the S-P chart into the formative evaluation in senior high school biology teaching. Forging a sound basis is a primary task in a exam-oriented revision lesson. During the teaching process, teachers are supposed to guide students to reflect on and sort out basic knowledge systematically and differentiate details and emphasize key reviewing points and difficult points. Before a revision lesson, what students have and have not known should be already known beforehand. The S-P curve analysis drawn before teaching can thus guide the next round of revision. Thus, the teaching suggestions and stimuluses of relevant knowledge can be put forward in order to improve biology revision effects, and information and clues for further teaching and coaching can be provided with this S-P curve analysis.This research gives a application example of S-P chart evaluation, combined with detailed examples, where students and tests are analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively with data, figures and charts. Therefore, analyzing results can be more valuable and more profound, achieving functions and purposes of formative evaluations, The S-P chart concerned in the research adopts a developing environment, where a S-P chart is divided into two-demensional charts, therefore providing reference for formative evaluation practice and have implication s for genetics teaching in senior high school.
