With the popularization and application of the new curriculum reform, extracurricular reading and the linking between class and after class activities have been paid more attention to during the language learning. However, extracurricular reading in language teaching in the vocational high schools appears to be incapable, immethodical and inefficient. As a result, the author chose this topic, which had been discussed more than once but had not been settled in the language teaching in the vocational high school.In this thesis, to begin with, the author elucidated the necessity and the significance of extracurricular reading to the students in the vocational high school systematically. There is no doubt that reinforcing the extracurricular reading will aid the students in language accumulation to improve their language competence, in gaining information and language acquisition to form a good habit of autonomic learning, thus promoting the comprehensive quality as well as establishing excellent moral trait. Having analyzed the questionnaires about the extracurricular reading among the vocational high schools, the author discourses upon the current situation of extracurricular reading in vocational high schools, as a consequence of examination-oriented education system, which is alarming. Firstly, the students haven’t fallen into a groove of extracurricular reading and no efficient methods. In addition, some students have no intention of reading extracurricular and lack effectual means. To make things worse, adequate books and excellent reading environment are not available to most students, who have an appetite for improving themselves. Finally, there is a decided difference between the students in vocational high schools and regular senior secondary schools. The reasons for the situation are various. Parents and teachers have unenlightened conception, which weakens students’passion of extracurricular reading. In vocational schools, some students’poor self-quality restricts the quality of extracurricular reading. Therefore, the author provides the readers with a series of strategies, such as, attach more importance to extracurricular reading, arouse students’interest of extracurricular reading, draw up practical plans for extracurricular reading, recommend appropriate reading materials and intensify the guidance to develop extracurricular reading extensively.As the writer of this thesis, which is only part of the field of extracurricular reading in language teaching in the vocational high schools, I expect the topic to be researched further and thoroughly.
